H.A. Rey was a popular children's illustrator and author, most famous for the Curious George series. The H.A. Rey Papers consist of professional correspondence, manuscript dummies for the sixth printing of The Stars: A New Way to See Them, and documents pertaining to the copyright lawsuit between H.A. Rey and Leroy Fleming. The correspondence dominates the collection with both incoming and outgoing to the Rey's publishers--Houghton Mifflin in the United States and A.P. Watt & Son in England.

Author and illustrator Hans Augusto Rey was born September 16, 1898, in Hamburg, Germany, immigrated to the US in 1940, became a citizen in 1946 and spent the majority of his life until his death in 1977, writing and illustrating children's literature, his best known works being the Curious George books, featuring the monkey Curious George. He created over forty children's books, many with his wife Margaret, and a few under the pseudonym Uncle Gus....
